Yup! Same here. Helped (?) that my father had entrusted his mother’s inheritance to an investor friend who promised a fantastic return; my parents went into debt when the scheme went bust, and I only found out years later that if I had not gone into the Navy, my younger sister would not have gone to college. Left me terrified of being broke, and I lived lean with X amount socked away every month in low-risk/boring-yield funds. I married a woman with a similar mindset and we’re comfortable in retirement.
