Imagination ready? Let’s walk around, the two of us,
take a little stroll through the rooms of the heart.

Atrium sinistrum (duck your head coming through);
ventriculus sinister — space to stretch out!
Ventriculus dexter — workroom, shipping room;
atrium dextrum’s an old receiving dock.

Look at the blue blood, oxy poor, lungs bound,
look at the red blood, life blood, life spark.
Tough pericardium keeps it all together,
keeps it all together but it can’t keep it out.

Listen to the heart pound, blood flow, automatic
background percussion, but the melody’s faint.

Let’s check out the side rooms, back rooms, closets
where the memories live and the logic does not.

Scuff a little snow with some star dust in it,
sprinkled by a man with a beard and a bag
who lives in your heart, keeps a tune humming in it,
always leaves the light on for when you come back.

Gather up the star dust, breathe life in it,
put it in the trees and whistle, Joy To The World.
Light a scented candle; brew some apple cider;
breathe in the aromas ’til your lungs are filled.

See a passerby who left home without a smile?
Give her one of yours, it’ll come around again.
Share a happy hug with a child needing comfort,
any age of child (and it could be you!).

Curl up in the big chair, sip the warm cocoa,
watch an old movie for the twenty-seventh time.
Sleep in the heart with the many rooms in it;
dream hello to Santa Claus and let him bring you home.
