Why does this remind me of the (now discredited) [he said hopefully] practice in Roman Catholic…

If someone convinced me that red hair is sinful, and preached at me to pray that my hair would change colour, and they told me that my sins were blocking God from making this change in my life, it doesn’t matter how much spiritual guidance and support they provided to me. That would still be abusive.

Why does this remind me of the (now discredited) [he said hopefully] practice in Roman Catholic schools of "teaching" left-handed students to use the "proper" hand, "as God intended"?
