When I had broken ribs, the only way I could sleep was propped up. Also OTC analgesics and sleep meds (Sominex? this was a few decades ago).

Also (and you probably know this already) practice breathing deeply. Otherwise you set yourself up for an increased chance of pneumonia. You have to be mindful of it, because otherwise you just avoid the pain with shallow breathes.
