We were chatting about that at work, Mark, with a young (20-something) colleague who just bought a home. We both agreed that while the unforeseen expenses and projects (he had just finished weekend #2 on a “we’ll just touch up some paint in the kitchen” project that had evolved into painting, replastering, and electrical modifications, and might escalate into “screw it, I’m tearing down this section and putting up drywall”) could be draining, the emotional satisfaction of “I am putting a nail in this wall that will leave a hole, and I don’t care because it’s MY wall, dammit!” could not be beat.
