Virtual business contacts: The illustrator for Deb’s books for kids has worked with us twice now, and we’ve never met her. But Valerie was perfect for us in terms of quality, speed, professionalism, and (not trivial!) a sense of whimsy and playfulness. We contracted with her through a site that specializes in freelancers.

Virtual personal contacts: There was this new job I was starting, and the HR head (who was also the head of administrative services and the president’s secretary — small company) contacted me by emails to get paperwork done ahead of my start date. We exchanged wise-ass remarks back and forth. I didn’t think of it as flirting, since I figured at that level she was probably old (40s?) and married. We met when I started, hit it off, and by the time I realized I was “old” (tad over 41) and she wasn’t married we had gotten to be friends. It worked out. (Anniversary #17 this weekend!)
