Valentines Card for My Wife

You didn’t fall for my looks
Because you couldn’t see them by email
(And there’s not much there anyway).
You didn’t fall for my charm
Because I spend most conversations with new people
Just trying not to say something stupid.
You liked my jokes
And, better yet,
Spun them back to me,
Like a verbal tennis match.
You liked my hair,
Which is odd,
Since I have so little.
You liked that I was smart
While you subtly demonstrated
How brilliant you are.
You liked how I paid attention to you,
Though I’ve told you countless times since
That I could watch your smile for hours
While memorizing each crinkle at the corners of your eyes.
You liked how I forgave your sins
While you absolved me of mine,
So we became each others confessors
And redeemers.
Then you cried on me and I held you
While I cried on you and you held me
Until our tears and our love merged together
Blended together
Coalesced together.
And when I asked you to marry me
You wouldn’t even let me finish
Because it was a stupid question.
