The last chime of midnight failed to sound, nor did the first through eleventh, as the hospice nurse had stopped the old clock for being too noisy for her patient. The ghost appeared before the fireplace, which was dark and cold, since the hospice nurse disliked how the wood heat made the room’s temperature too uneven and uncomfortable for her patient. As the ghost started to walk toward the antique bed containing a sleeping figure, a feminine voice came from the shadowed chair next to it, speaking softly so as not to disturb the patient.
“Hi, Lillie. Long time no see. Aren’t you supposed to recite some sort of warnings of doom, or whatever?”
The ghost, dressed in women’s casual business clothing from the late 20th Century, smiled at the seated thirty-something woman wearing fashionable sweat gear. Lillie also kept her voice low. “Hello, Alice. You’re looking very lovely and grown up. How’s your grandma doing?”
