Susan, IR = infrared (the amount of heat something is giving off, basically), which used to require expensive film but now can be done with digital cameras. When the results show in color you get a very bizarre (but useful) photo:

When the results are in b&w it’s just kind of eerie:

White is cooler, black is warmer, so trees show the cooler leaves and warmer trunks.
