Scuttlebutt, as I recall (and as my right-click lookup confirms) goes back to sailing ship days, so that will probably come in and out. š
Words evolve, lots of times. One of my favorites is "dashboard." First it was the board on the front of the carriage, where you dashed the horse's reins. Then it was the area at the front of the horseless carriage ("y'know, where the dashboard would be") where the instruments went. Then the instruments became the most important aspect, and now a "dashboard" is anything that has a summary of informational readouts; my smart home app has a "dashboard" button that tells me what's going on. What's that got to do with a horse and carriage?
