Reminds me of the old anecdote:

And I’m sure that’s the way life felt for many of us. Advice wasn’t often offered in my family. The few times it was, I ignored it. Because youth needs its own struggle. It’s only with our 20/20 hindsight can we look back and see where, perhaps, things might have turned out differently — if only we’d followed the advice given us.

OLDSTER: "Wisdom is knowing how to make good choices."
YOUNGSTER: "So how do I acquire wisdom?"
Oldster thinks for a bit.
OLDSTER: "By making bad choices."
