Points, sure. If you get enough points on a date, you get to go on another date, yes? Or a first date, depending on point of view, since the woman who introduced me to escargot was Alice, of whom I’ve spoken elsewhere.

So I *did* score enough points on the date-but-not-a-date (with snails) to get a second (first?) date, which went VERY well. So well that when I called her the next day to thank her for a wonderful time, she said she didn’t want to see me again.

I was confused.

She had just broken up with someone after a long relationship (she had mentioned that before) and she didn’t want to get into anything serious for awhile. She liked me enough that she was afraid we’d get serious, so she’d appreciate it if I didn’t call her again.

Oh. Okay. Bye.

It wasn’t until years later, after my divorce, that I understood where she was coming from. Kinda hard at the time, though.

Anyway, points! Turns out it’s possible to score too many on a date. Things people learn in their youth.
