On US Navy ships, newbies would be sent looking for “relative bearing grease” during their first training watch. (The angle between an observed object and the ship’s bow is the relative bearing, so a contact directly to starboard would have a 90° relative bearing.) As the poor kid wandered over the ship, they’d be directed from one area to another, so you could say it was great practice learning their way around. 🙄
