Oh my, Louise! How many times have you done this with a new cat?
My first wife and I had a rescue (Coriander) who arrived as a terrified, underweight mental wreck, abandoned by her previous owners. It took us a couple/three months to get her adapted; me being at home most of the day every day helped. (I was unemployed and living out of my wife's — actually ex-wife, at that point — guest room, looking for work during the 1990/91 recession, so I had LOTS of time between job interviews.) It didn't help that the senior cat bullied Coriander initially, until Cori got big enough to look threatening. She never fought back, though; she was this gentle, trusting soul who liked everybody, once she wasn't afraid of them.
