My wife definitely felt #5, Bebe. She felt unappreciated by her final boss at the university where she’d worked for almost two decades, and that sense of being undervalued motivated her to find a temp job soon after retirement. The new workplace loved her, Deb exceeded her job requirements (she’s the type who looks around for things to do when the day is slow), and yet she still got home by 5pm every night (when we were both working, it was not unusual to get home around 7pm). Then the next year, the tax firm called her to see if she was available (they just need the help Jan-Apr) and let her know that if Deb wanted a permanent spot, they would love to have her. But at that point COVID restrictions on travel were letting up, so she told them thanks but no.
Since then Deb has become the unofficial backup office administrator for our church, so she feels needed without being essential. And when the tax firm called her this year, she told them she wasn’t available.
Me? I write, I putter, I goof around, I cook for my wife. I’m good. 😁
