My first trip to pick out civilian business clothing, I took a female friend along (gay, but she'd been married to a guy and had good fashion sense). Having an extra set of eyes helps when trying stuff on, and women (in my experience) look at how men dress more critically than men do. And they're more likely to ask things like, "And you're getting new socks, right? Right!"
