Lol! They’re red buds, Bev. GORGEOUS in the spring — they are the only tree I know of that puts out flowers on the trunk and main branches, for (as best I can tell) no reason, since by late spring there are no fruits or visible traces at all.
By this point (mid-May) the flowers are all gone and the leaves are all deep red. By mid summer a second batch of leaves, all green, will be out, the first leaves will be green, and other than a VERY thick canopy the trees will be unremarkable.
Deb grew up with them in her yard and is delighted by them! I had never heard of them, and when they were first planted in August 2017 (with plain green leaves) I was unimpressed. Now I adore them also. 😊
