America Made Great Again! Again!

Trapped in a high-rise,
Fire above and below,
Stairs ablaze.

“We can make the roof if we run!” someone shouted,
Dashing into the flames through the door.

“The secret is to flap as hard as you can!”
Screamed the one with flailing arms who flashed by the window.

Fire or flight? Time to choose.
If you feel like you are already burning
Why not dare the fire?
If you cannot feel the floor support you
Why not leap into space?

Or I can listen to the little voice
That tells me to curl into a ball,
Wrap myself in blankets,
Hide under the desk and wait.
For rescue.
For redemption.
For miracles.

So I curled myself up
And breathed in the smoke
And breathed in the smoke
And breathed in the smoke
And the floor fell away beneath me.
