Jack, speaking from a recent experience, it may be a question of “how do I deliver an honest review to a friend when I honestly thought the work needs work.” I purchased a book a friend wrote off Amazon (because every little sale helps!) and read it and… oh dear. Was it bad? No! Was it good? Um… pretty good… l told my wife what I would say in a review and was told I needed to work harder on it. ME: But it’s honest! DEB: (eye roll)

So maybe some people have a harder time rephrasing “It did not suck! Not most parts. Mostly” into something less assholish? Or they’re afraid they might have to if they actually read it?
