It was a weird time in the Navy, too. Some commands (especially in the Pacific Fleet, it felt like) didn’t give a damn about sailors who were fairly open about their sexuality, while others had witch hunts. And things could turn on a dime, of course, with a change of command or even a new XO, or someone deciding to destroy someone else’s life. My wife at the time (who thought she was bi when she married me) let me know that I might be getting some questions from NIS about what I knew about her past affairs, and possibly maybe a court martial inquiry about attempting to commit fraud by marrying her so as to protect her from suspicion (bogus charge, but it would have been severely unnerving). Nothing ever came of it, though; the family rumor network tended toward the overly-cautious side (for some odd reason!). Sandy 🤺 Knight was a squid about the same time period, she can tell you some stories that didn’t end so well. ☹️
