I will admit that when I switched to the Medium writers program several years after starting to write on Medium, I was motivated by replying to friends who asked what I did in retirement, “I’m a writer!” “Wow! Do you get paid?” “Yup!”
Now it’s: “Wow! You get paid?” Long pause. “Um, yup.”
Assuming my earnings were over $9.99, of course. <sigh>
