I was a physics major in college, Annie, but since I had engineering training there (the Naval Academy at that time was so STEM-oriented that even English majors graduated with a Bachelor of Science) and in Nuclear Power School, my wife refers to me as an engineer. Sometimes in a positive way, sometimes not so much. (Deb’s second husband — a total putz who was into mental abuse — was an engineer, so she still has flashes of anti-engineer hostility at times.) I definitely fit into the lack-of-social-graces engineer stereotype.
