I used to take “breaks” by changing jobs. I got burned out doing tech support and database development, so I switched to a new company as a tech writer. Only I would see ways that a nice simple program would help with something, so I ended up as a programmer/tech writer within a few years. From there to IT manager to programmer/db admin to… screw it, getting too old for this crap, retirement.
Sometimes I was able to change a job from the inside; sometimes I lucked into something completely (well, somewhat) different. But giving 250% to a job was never something I could sustain for too long.
