I suspect as much. One of the reasons I wanted to inlcude it in a story from the 1970s.

…hing was to hide behind a car parked in the street so you could jump out quickly and grab a bumper. Of course, the bumpers on modern cars are useless for this, so the sport probably died off.
In Michigan, we called what you call skitching "shagging." Which the British find very amusing.

"Wait! You grabbed the BUMPER, Granddad?! How?"
"See, back then, bumpers weren't so much part of the car as attached to it, so there was space to get your fingers in."
"Oh, I've seen pictures of those! Model T, right?"
