I never understood why this was a big deal until I left home. In my house growing up, we ALWAYS (from so young an age I have no memory of learning it) put the toilet lid down, thereby ensuring the seat was down, and also making sure that anyone who used the toilet next had to raise the lid and, optionally, the seat. I didn’t get out of the habit until my first wife asked whythehell she always had to raise the lid EVERY SINGLE TIME. So we compromised and did it her way.
