I looked into consulting (IT consulting) after I got out of the Navy. One fellow already in the business was kind enought to chat on the phone with me for about 15 minutes.
"So how do you like being in sales?" he asked.
Confused, I responded, "I don't. I hate sales and I'm no good. I just want to be a computer consultant."
"Uh huh. Thing is, if you're an independent consultant, you're a salesman first and foremost, because you need to be selling yourself every chance you get. If you don't like doing sales, you'll either be unhappy or broke. Probably both."
I started applying for regular jobs.
Years later, I went to work for a small company that did consulting work. We had a dedicated sales force. I would go on the occasional sales call, but my job was to be the tech expert, not close the sale. Maybe your husband might have luck in that direction, Ruby?
