I feel guilty talking about how well we are doing, financially (assuming my parents don’t bleed us dry), emotionally, and (on Deb’s side, anyway) familially. The two of us realize we’re pretty damn lucky, all things considered. And part of that is just being brought up to look on the positive side; we’ve both been through periods where despair could have been all-consuming (okay, attempted suicide on my part in my youth, but otherwise, yep, fairly chipper) but we made it through. I don’t know how I’d be able to tell that to younger people (say, 44 or junior) today.
