“I am not marrying you. Just so you know.”
Scott finished the paragraph in the book he was reading before he looked up at Mary, who had just seated herself across from him at their usual table in the company lunch room. His friend was unloading her lunch bag as she always did, apparently not waiting for Scott’s reaction before starting her lunch. Scott was about to say something, then spotted the newcomer just seating herself next to Mary. “Hi, Bev! What brings you here?” Scott added a smile and straightened up in his chair.
Bev held up her own lunch bag and tipped her head at Mary. “Someone — I won’t name names, except it might be someone I room with—forgot her lunch. It was easier for me to walk over here than for her to get down the street to my office and back, so I figured I would also have lunch with her, and maybe check out some cute guys where she works.” She cocked her head at Scott. “Know any?”
Mary clucked sympathetically at Scott. “Exes can be so harsh, don’t you think?”
Scott seemed slightly shellshocked. Confused, anyway. “Okay, that’s— look, there’s— first of all, she’s not my ex, we went on two dates—”
