<cough> Um, I may have somewhat done this, when I needed a job (my previous company had been bought out and was disintegrating). I interviewed for an IT manager slot, despite being seven years out of direct network/systems management, by emphasizing my strong points and minimizing my weaknesses. I hit it off with the company president and got hired.
No worries! I had two people working for me who were well acquainted with the servers and network. I just needed to take a little extra time here and there to bring myself back up to speed...
The senior person working for me quit three months after I joined. Okay, fine, a LOT of extra time to bring myself up to speed...
My second date with a very nice lady I met at my new company (the president's assistant) had me showing up hours late because of a server failure (but I fixed it!) and we ended up eating takeout at her place and watching a videotape she owned rather than whatever impressive plan I had. <sigh> OTOH, the first date had gone really well, she adapted to circumstances and was very understanding (Deb has always been good about that), and the date didn't end until after breakfast the next morning. Also, we didn't get to watch the end of the tape until months later. Possibly after we were married.
ANYway, faking it at work turned out to be one of my better decisions. For a variety of reasons.
