Part 1:

“Mr. Jack! Hey there? Can you help me with the gate, please?” Lolo called out.

Jack got up off the park bench and walked over to the park’s side gate. He checked the gate’s hinges — one was still broken, so the gate dragged on the ground—and lifted the gate enough to pull it open to let Lolo in, then shut it behind her.

“I need to get a drink from the water fountain!” She took off. Jack shrugged and returned to the park bench he had been sitting at before, picking the slightly shadier side. He opened his iPad and resumed reading.

Lolo plopped herself down on the bench next to him and announced, “I think I might be bi.”

Jack put down his tablet. “Hi to you, too. When you say, ‘bi,’ you mean…?”

His young friend gave him her standard look of scorn. “Y’know? Bi-sexual? Likes boys and girls? They had those back in the Dark Ages, right?”
