Chat with Deb — Our Great Northern Cruise, Part 8
Fiddler on the roof? How about a lawn mower on the roof!
Previously, on Our Great Northern Cruise:
I should mention I recently found that Bebe Nicholson and her hubs were on Iceland the same month we were!
But they were inland, traveling by land, and we circled the coast by ship. They got to see more waterfalls and geysers, we got more sea birds and coastal panoramas. Lots of ice for both of us, though! (Yes, in August.) If you didn’t know, you would not think we were on the same island.
We both got to see earthen houses. Ours (in Grenivík, near Akureyri) were bigger. (We win, Bebe! 😉) A museum had taken over an early-1900s farming turf house (really more like a complex of interconnected homes) that had housed 15 (winter) to 30 (summer) people. Plus animals. Wood was very expensive on Iceland then (still not cheap) so using sod for the sides and roof was the best way to insulate.
