Previously, on our Great Northern Cruise:

Now we were in Reykjavík⁩, signed up for the Highlights of Reykjavík⁩ tour. Our tour guide started by apologizing that we would not be able to get close to the great church Hallgrímskirkja in the city, because the annual Pride celebration was on and the area was closed to cars and buses, but we could check it out on foot later if we wanted.

First stop: ‎⁨Árbær Open Air Museum⁩, which was founded as a way to preserve the “old Iceland” villages and buildings. As Iceland was growing more prosperous, new housing was replacing old, some of it only a few decades old. The museum had rescued a farm, a fishing village, and a town square.

The old Icelandic buildings, with the modern buildings of Reykjavík⁩ in the background. (all photos by author unless otherwise noted)

DEB: This is like Shelburne Village in Vermont! I loved that place. Remember, you and I went there a couple years ago?

ME: Um, sure! (checking photos from 2021 — oh yeah, Shelburne, lovely museum)
