Alas, Bebe, our experience with “deer proof” here in south central PA is that some flowers deer will NEVER touch… until they do. Mums: totally deer resistant! Until last fall, when they were suddenly the most tasty things EV-ER! Twelve years ago we had half a dozen rose bushes; eleven years ago we had one, a heritage rose with a wonderful scent. The lone survivor was untouched (except by Japanese beetles) for a decade, and then last year was twice taken down to nothing but old thorny twigs (but still bounced back!). Maybe it was yet another 2020 thing?
“Plant marigolds around the roses, deer hate marigolds.” 😁 A month later, rose eaten, marigolds fine. 😡 “Oh, just make sure the marigolds are higher than the roses!” What sort of mutant bush-size marigolds we talking about? 😳 <sigh>
