Ah yes. For me, when I was an instructor at Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, it was “Seaman Gamatch.” Seaman Gamatch was the lead character in my sea stories and illustrative tales that went with the lesson. If there was a way to do something wrong, if there was a poor soul who needed correction, if there was an idiot who could screw up an operation beyond redemption, Seaman Gamatch was there. Toward the end of the set (semester), I could start a story, pause dramatically (“And then who entered but…”), and the class would chant, “Seaman Gamatch!”
