So if I read you right, you’re saying that someone’s speech pattern changes in a way that listeners (who probably also have little experience firsthand with foreign languages) interpret as <whatever> sounding. (And once you put it in someone’s head that “José sounds British now,” they listen for affirming sounds.) Am I close?
