Ah, but those were 1960s Republicans, when Nixon was considered right-wing, “Rockefeller Republicans” were a thing, and Goldwater was a tad extreme. I suspect most Republicans from that era (who survive) are aghast at the still-expanding multi-vehicle pileup that is today’s GOP. (But they’ll keep the tax cut, thank you.)

The joke back then was: A group of Republicans and a group of Democrats are walking along on opposite sides of a small lake. They each look out and see a person drowning in the middle of the lake; they look at their feet and see a rope. The Republicans throw the rope half-way to the victim and then shout encouragement to swim to the rope. The Democrats toss the rope in the general direction of the victim, then hurry off to do their next good deed.

Nowadays, alas, the GOP group would stand and watch the victim drown, all agreeing that it was probably an illegal immigrant and, in any case, the person had made bad personal choices to get to the middle of the lake so how was it their responsibility to be rescuers? The Dems would be arguing about whether the rope was locally-sourced, whether it should be paid for individually or collectively, what changes needed to be made to school curricula to teach water safety…
