An old friend tells the story how, back in her early 20s when she was stationed in San Diego, she was bar hopping solo in an unfamiliar part of town. She loved piano bars, and ducked into one that looked promising. The piano player was on a break, so she looked around as she nursed her drink; oddly, although she was the only woman in the place and was very cute [still is, IMHO, and her spouse would agree] none of the guys in the bar had approached her yet, even though there were quite a few good-looking men. Mostly sitting in pairs. Very engaged with each other…

OH! (Young, as I said.)

So she was getting ready to leave when the piano player returned and started his set. She went over to the piano, enjoyed a couple numbers, made a request to which she sang along. Gradually guys came over. Somebody refilled her glass. They started another song…

She remembers at one point relaxing on top of the piano, singing her lungs out, being surrounded by “gorgeous guys” who were singing along, all while feeling very safe. At some point somebody must have gotten her a cab, because she got home fine. One of her happy memories of her youth.
